Human brain is a wonderful organ that never fails to amaze us!
Right from consciousness to mindful decisions to controlling all of the actions in the body, there is a lot of interesting mystery involved with the brain.
In this video, let’s talk about some of those interesting mysteries!
If we calculate the length of the blood vessels within the brain, they 150000 miles as a whole. These blood vessels carry blood and oxygen across various regions of the brain.
The brain is highly active all the time. To put it in numbers, there are 100000 reactions that happen in the brain in a second.
Another interesting and amazing fact is that the brain is an organ that doesn’t feel pain itself – while ironically, it helps all the other organs of the body to realize the pain.
This is the reason why neurosurgeons are able to probe inside the brain and examine the regions without having to anaesthetize the patient.
On an average day you get about 70000 thoughts!
73% of the brain is water. And that’s why our brain activity could be greatly affected when your body is dehydrated.
Even a deprivation of water by more than 2% can cause loss in attention, loss of memory and also cognitive skills.
Do you always find yourself not getting sound sleep when you sleep in a new environment? You are not alone! And your brain is responsible for that.
Your brain processes danger when you sleep in a new environment and hence stays half awake to be more aware.
And do you know why most of us cry when we are in extremely happy situations? Well, hypothalamus in our brain doesn’t know to differentiate between strong happiness and strong sadness.
If you are someone who is boasting that you can multitask, you are fooling yourself – sorry to be rude but that’s the truth.
You cannot actually multitask. You can only switch context. Instead of actually doing things, you are switching back and forth between tasks.
Bad of all, when you attempt to multi-task the error rate goes up by 25% and the time taken to actually complete the tasks is doubled.
The weight of an average adult brain is 1.5 Kg. It just makes up to 2% of the total body weight, but uses up 20% of the energy.
Our attention span is very poor. And over the last 15 years we have lost about 4 seconds of our attention span.
On average, we cannot concentrate on one thing for more than 8 seconds.
The brain generates about 25 watts of electricity. This means, you can power up a low watt LED bulb!
Your brain absolutely needs oxygen and glucose to survive and it takes about 3-5 minutes for the brain to suffer irreversible damage.
This is the reason why most deaths are not instant. With the available oxygen and glucose, the brain still continues to control the heart and other organs.
Even in the case of decapitation, death does not occur until after several minutes.
Over the times, the human brain has shrunk in size. When compared to our ancestors, our brain has reduced in size.
This is because of the mere fact that our body has shrunk too. A smaller body naturally requires a smaller brain!
The more you use your brain, the more you build it. The more you learn, more connections are formed in the brain and the corresponding areas of the brain are improved.
SImilarly if you push yourself to memorize more and more data, the storage capacity of your brain improves a lot too.
This also means that if you fail to use your brain, you will lose all those improvements! You will also in fact lose some connections and memory regions.
So I’ll wind up with this and let these facts sink into your brain. If you know any interesting fact about the human brain, don’t forget to share it in the comments below.
